Not always. A 66W (5A) USB-C cable is only one part of the fast-charging chain. To reach “full speed” in a car, your charging rate depends on (1) the car charger’s supported charging standard and wattage, (2) your phone or device’s supported standard, and (3) whether the cable can safely carry the current the charger is trying to deliver.
If your phone relies on USB Power Delivery for its fastest charging—common with iPhones (via USB-C to Lightning or USB-C to USB-C for newer models), Google Pixel, many Samsung phones (PD/PPS), iPads, and many laptops—then a PD-capable car charger is required to hit those higher PD wattage levels. A 5A cable won’t “create” PD on its own; it simply allows higher current when the charger and device negotiate a compatible mode.
Some devices use proprietary fast-charge standards (or vendor-specific profiles) that may not be pure PD. In those cases, you might still see high wattage without PD—if your car charger and device match the same standard. However, USB-C ports increasingly default to PD-based negotiation for higher power, so PD (often with PPS) is the most reliable path to consistent fast charging across different devices.
“66W 5A” mainly tells you the cable is built to handle up to 5 amps safely (typically with an e-marker chip). That matters because many higher-power USB-C modes require a 5A-rated cable; otherwise, the charger and device may fall back to a lower, safer level (like 3A), reducing speed. But if your car charger tops out at 18W or your phone only accepts 20W, you won’t see 66W no matter how capable the cable is.
